I am very interested in the Mars 87 lander design, and I think the artwork here is fantastic. Is it yours or did you get it from the original documents?
This design also influenced the 1991 ISU Mars study, along with the 1986 Case for Mars designs. I have these if you do not, and are interested in seeing them.
Logically, entry into the control cabin would have to be though the ascent module, conveniently located at the centre of mass as shown as the docking point in the orbital complex diagrams. But there is no such tunnel shown, or room for one.
Several possibilities come to mind: 1) The crew descends in the ascent stage and does an EVA to the habitat module after landing. 2) The new does an EVA to the forward module and descends in that and then does an EVA to the ascent stage and the end of the surface stay. Similar EVA transfers were considered for the US MOL and of course the Soviet LK moon lander. 3) an inflatable external tunnel deployed after landing (as was also considered for MOL).
